I can’t believe its 2017 and we are almost halfway through the month of January! I hope everyone had a wonderful New Year’s celebration! The hubby and I had a quiet evening at home with our two boys; but we did manage to stay up to watch the ball drop and have a couple of glasses of wine after the kids went to sleep! That is a parent win right there!
I made it a priority to clean my vanity a bit in an attempt to start the new year feeling somewhat organized. While I was going through the mess I had made for myself, I realized how many great products I started using this past year. I thought why not pick my favorites and share the things that I loved from 2016 and a few staples that I have been using forever now!
I wrote in detail about Milk Makeup’s Cooling Water in my “Wake Up Make Up” post and my love affair with this product has only continued. I love the way this stuff makes my under eyes feel! This is definitely a product that is sticking around for me in 2017!
I have tried countless black eyeliner pencils over the years but in November I picked up Ardency Inn’s MODSTER Smooth Ride Supercharged Eyeliner in black and I haven’t put it down! This pencil is so creamy and a dream to blend out especially on the lower lash line. I haven’t had any smudging issues and it stays put in my water line. This product has gotten a lot of use since it was purchased and I can tell this pencil will last a long time. Win. Win. Win.
I own just about every Anastasia Beverly Hills eyeshadow palette out there. I love the formula of her shadows, which keeps me going back for more! Thanks to Kim Kardashian, her celebrity makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic, has become a household name in the beauty industry and he is beyond talented. When I found out that ABH and Mario were collaborating on an eyeshadow palette, I was basically counting down the days until its release. The Master Palette by Mario is beautiful! Why do brands always have to make the best products limited edition?! I hesitated including this palette as a part of this post because it is sold out everywhere online but I have seen it in a couple of my local Sephora stores! So if you haven’t scooped this up and you see it in store – BUY IT!
So let’s just keep the Anastasia train rolling here, shall we? It may seem a bit excessive to purchase another palette right after the Mario one but like I said, I LOVE her eyeshadows. This palette is no exception. Modern Renaissance includes 14 gorgeous neutral to berry tone shades. I am so glad this palette is a permanent fixture for the brand because I have been using this a lot recently and I undoubtedly will be needing another!
ABH Brow Wiz has always been my brow pencil of choice but 2016 brought some stiff competition. Benefit Cosmetics Precisely My Brow Pencil is super creamy, easy to use, and comes in a variety of shades. Over the last couple of months I have been reaching for this more frequently than my brow wiz and I have a feeling that will continue! I wrote about this next product in my “Holiday Wishlist” post back in the beginning of December. I currently have five different colors in Make Up For Ever’s Aqua XL Eye Pencil and I use them all the time! I love the wide variety of colors to choose from. The shades are incredibly unique and the ones I own look absolutely stunning blended out on the lower lash line. Every time I go into Sephora I swatch a new shade to figure out which is next to be added to my collection. So don’t be surprised if I am raving about a new pencil color from this line in a future post!
Listen, I can talk about/do makeup until I am blue in the face but I have a very minimum skill level when it comes to hair. I also have extremely limited amounts of time to mess with it. The things I look for in finding hair products are simple: 1.) make my life easier 2.) no nasty, sticky residue. Unfortunately for me, most hair products I have tried rarely fulfill the second part of my requirements. These following two products pass my tests and are hair routine staples in my book!
L’Oreal Elnett Satin hairspray is the first one I have found that has given me the hold I want without that crunchy-hard feeling. I love that this hair spray is brush-able. I know this product has been around forever and I cannot believe I waited this long to try it!
Like I said before, I have very limited amounts of time to do my hair. This also includes washing and blow drying it. (I seriously think blow drying should be considered a job and I would like to be compensated for my efforts) My day 3
and 4, ok sometimes 5 hair is brought to you by Drybar Detox Dry Shampoo. I have tried several brands and I always come back to this one! The mistake I made in the past when using dry shampoos is after applying the product I would immediately massage it into my scalp. I would never feel like it was truly absorbing the excess oil and my hair would go right back to looking like I should have just carved out the time to wash it in the first place! If you have experienced the same thing, try leaving it on for a good 3-5 minutes and then massage it into your scalp/brush out your hair. What a world of difference that has made for me!
In the summer I love the bronze coloring my skin soaks up (always protected with SPF though of course! Ain’t nobody got time for premature wrinkles!) however by November 1 I start looking like Casper the Friendly Ghost. I have managed to find several bronzers I love for the spring/summer time when New England decides to heat up but the winter time is a different story. All bronzers are different and choosing one can be challenging. What works for one person will not necessarily work for another. I found Bobbi Brown Bronzing Powder in Golden Light at the beginning of last year and I am obsessed with it! The texture is silky smooth and it has a beautiful matte finish that leaves you with the most natural looking sunkissed glow. If your skin becomes fair in the colder months like mine and you’ve been struggling to find a bronzer that works with your skin tone, give this one a shot!
2016 was the year of highlighters. I feel like there was a new highlighter released every other day and to be honest I wanted most of them. There were two that really stuck out for me when looking at the ones I have in my collection. Make Up For Ever Pro Light Fusion in Golden Pink has been my go to highlight for almost the last two months! This shade is perfect for fair to medium skin tones and gives off the most radiant sheen on the skin. My problem with a lot of a highlighters is they can look to “glittery” or bring attention to skin texture that you wouldn’t necessarily want to emphasize. This product is soft and almost undetectable on the skin. Next time you’re in Sephora go give this a swatch!
My tanned May-September self absolutely loved Laura Geller’s Baked Swirl Illuminator in Gilded Honey. This highlighter is absolutely stunning on the high points of the cheekbones. I think I used this almost every day in the summer and once my skin color warms up a bit, it will go right back into its normal rotation!
I have been using Mac Warm Soul blush for what seems like forever now. This formula is so lightweight but is buildable to give you just the right wash of color to enhance your cheekbones. This shade would work for so many people and is hands down my favorite every day blush.
Even in the winter months my skin is more oily than it’s not. I am always on the hunt for a foundation that will keep my t-zone matte throughout the day without a million touch-ups. L’Oréal Pro-Matte Foundation does just that AND its affordable! I raved about this foundation and its dewy-finish sister (the Pro-Glow version) in my “Affordable Favorites” post. This is a product I will continue to buy over and over again because the coverage is great, it’s not too overly matte where it compromises the smooth/soft look of my skin, and it’s incredibly inexpensive in comparison to some of the “high-end” alternatives.
Mac’s Myth has been around for quite some time but it wasn’t until the beginning of 2016 that this shade found its way into my collection. When I initially tried it on I was very meh about the color and I actually thought it was too nude. I mean, is there really such a thing? The trick to make this lipstick work for me was pairing it with the right lip liner. (we’ll get to that next!) The lipstick is a color rich, satin formula with a semi matte finish. The amount of lipsticks, glosses, crayons, etc. that I own in the nude color family is absurd so for me to name one as my holy grail nude shade must mean its special!
I have found quite a few liners that I love to pair with Mac Myth but my favorite to use is Mac Whirl. I first line my lips with this, apply myth, and then go back over the outline of my lips with whirl to blend the two colors together. Whirl is a dusty rose shade that adds the perfect amount of definition that will give your classic nude lip a little something extra.
I don’t always use a lipgloss on top of my lipstick but when I do… it’s either Marc Jacobs Sugar Sugar or Buxom White Russian. I LOVE putting either one of these nude glosses on top of myth. I feel like it really finishes off the look. What I like about these two glosses is that they give your lips that super shiny glass look without the stickiness. They also have a tingly plumping effect that’s an added bonus too!
It was honestly so difficult for me to choose just these products as my 2016 favorites because there have really been so many more! I can only imagine how many new things I will fall in love with this year! What are some of your favorites from 2016?
