In my opinion, eyebrows are the most prominent feature on a person’s face. They can make or break any makeup look. I have rounded up my favorite products that help me take my brows from looking like distant cousins to close sisters!
The reality is that no one has perfect eyebrows without the help of products and/or grooming services. When I was a young teen I had your typical overgrown and wild-looking brows. I thought it was a great idea to pick up a pair of tweezers and pluck away what I believed to be the “problem hairs.” It wasn’t the greatest idea. I sat in front of a mirror for over an hour trying to make them look even but could never get it just right. By the end of my tweezathon, the tails of both of my eyebrows had almost completely disappeared. At 29 years old, my mother and sister still make fun of me for it! I have to admit when I look back at photos of my barely there brows, I cringe. It took years of very sparse looking brows for them to grow back in.
At 18 I began going to get my brows waxed at a local salon my friend raved about. I never realized how good my brows could look until I let a professional shape them for me. What a difference it made! Eyebrow shaping would most definitely be my first recommendation, unless you’re skilled in the art of brow shaping!
The first product I started using and instantly fell in love with was Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz. It is the holy grail brow pencil for so many people because it is just that good! This retractable pencil creates very precise hair like strokes that define your brows without making them look overdone. There is a wide range of shade options that accommodate the lightest and darkest of brows. The spooley at the other end of the pencil is perfect to brush out your brows before you use the product and afterward to help blend out the color. I do my brows just about every day and this pencil lasts me about 2-3 months.
Anastasia Beverly Hills added to their brow family and created the Brow Definer. I was so in love with the Brow Wiz that when this came out I immediately decided since Anastasia made it, I needed to have this one too. It differs from the Brow Wiz in that the shape of the pencil tip is triangular. I’ll be honest with you, using this product successfully takes some practice. Once you get the hang of it, the Brow Definer produces a great result. I loved using this product at first but unfortunately there is another negative for me. Once you’ve used it several times the tip of the pencil loses that perfect triangular shape. There is no obvious way to sharpen this pencil. I found after some research that if you angle the tip on the back of your hand, or piece of paper, and apply some pressure you can restore some of the original shape. This really isn’t ideal for two reasons. Firstly, that is a huge waste of product especially with its price point of $23 and to be honest, I have never gotten back to that perfectly triangular shape. If there was a way to do this the Brow Definer would be a slam dunk.
I was in Sephora a little over a month ago and saw a display for the new Benefit Cosmetics brow products. I was not looking for a new brow pencil as I was more than happy with my ABH Brow Wiz. BUT….there is always a but isn’t there? I am a sucker for packaging. The display looked so cute and I just had to swatch the shades of the pencils. I was intrigued at how smooth and pigmented these pencils applied on the back of my hand. I bought one and figured what is the worst that happens? It doesn’t work for me, I return it, and my Brow Wiz and me live happily ever after! Fast forward to today and guess which pencil I reach for first? This one! I still use and love my Brow Wiz, but #4 in Benefit’s Precisely My Brow Pencil is my current obsession!
After I am done filling in my brows with pencil I like to set it with Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Powder Duo in Dark Brown with her #7 brush. I have tried several angled brow brushes and I can tell you they are not created equally! This is hands down the best one I have tried. The bristles are firm and do not lose their shape after long-term usage and washing. The spooley at the opposite end also comes in handy!
For the Brow Powder Duo, I use the lighter shade toward the front of my brows and the darker shade at the ends, making sure to run the spooley through my brows in an upward motion to blend everything together. The last step in creating bulletproof brows is the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Gel in Clear. This stuff is like glue for your eyebrows. They wont budge until you wash your face before bed!
Once you find the right products and are comfortable using them, your brows will be picture perfect in minutes! What are your eyebrow must-haves?
